Tyrone Williams

Tyrone started Fresh Start with a lack of commitment at first.  He departed from the program and soon returned realizing that this was a good place for him to pursue his goals.  He then focused his efforts toward his GED preparation and carpentry skills.  Tyrone showed a lot of initiative toward establishing his independence.  He was specifically requested several times to represent Fresh Start in its Leadership Project with program partners, because of how well he was able to connect with the other participants.

Tyrone studied hard and passed the GED test.  After receiving his high school diploma, he immediately expressed interest in moving to the next educational opportunity.  Tyrone used his trade skills and work ethic to become a successful intern with Project Serve.   There he worked as a crew member on landscaping and construction projects.  He has applied and been accepted to attend Baltimore City Community College and plans to attend this fall.

Mr. Williams is now working at  Paddle Boats where he is able to apply many of the skills he gained as a Fresh Start student.  He enjoys his job and is quite good at it.  We are certain that Tyrone’s refusal to settle for less will drive him to continue to overcome the challenges that confront him in the future.  Congratulations Tyrone and GREAT SUCCESS!!

Activities and Field Trips

William S. Baer School

On Monday February 14, 2011, Fresh Start students and staff volunteered at the William S. Baer School, located in west Baltimore.  Each volunteer was placed in a class to serve as an instructional assistant for students with disabilities.  We assisted with the classes Valentine’s Day activities, assisted with class work, and assisted with lunch duty.  The Baer School was quite pleased with our  volunteers and has invited us to attend a field trip with them on March 28.

Walter’s Art Gallery       On Friday March 4, 2011, Fresh Start staff and students visited the Walter’s Art Gallery in downtown Baltimore.  Students explored exhibits and experienced history and art in a “do not touch” setting that was new to many.  All who visited expressed how much they enjoyed the trip and look forward to the next museum experience.

Intercontinental Hotel

Fresh Start would like to officially welcome Intercontinental Hotel back into its partnership network.  On Tuesday March 8, 2011, two Fresh Start students interviewed for an internship in the engineering department of the hotel.  Although they were quite impressed with both candidates, one candidate was selected to move to the final steps for application and will begin his internship in the coming weeks.  It is important to note that this partnership has been nurtured by the outstanding performance of a Fresh Start graduate who started as an intern and is now a full time Maintenance Engineer.  We look forward to the shared success of this partnership and applaud our graduate for opening the door for other program participants.

Matthew Smith

My name is Matthew and my ideal career is to become a carpenter.  Carpentry is special to me because I like to work with my hands.  While growing up, I would take my toys apart just to put them back together.

I find myself naturally gifted to understanding how things go together and how they work. Carpentry is very interesting to me because I get to build chairs, book racks, and other projects using wood. It opens my mind to a lot of things, like how Egyptians built their pyramids, how roller coasters are designed, and how to build skyscrapers. If you think about it, carpentry is all around you.

You need to know basic math in order to start the process of becoming a woodworker. Then, you’ll learn to understand that fractions, measurements, and angles will help you put together a small project. After you gain these skills, you’ll start getting creative and become better at woodworking. Finally, you will be ready to take classes for carpentry.

Carpentry is the perfect job for me, because I’m good at math and love to build.  This is my ideal job.
